John Joseph Thompson

John Joseph Thompson, of Southport, NC, passed away on May 8, 2017. He was born in NYC, April 12, 1929, to John Joseph Bernard Thompson and Anna Harrington. He attended Bayside High School and graduated from Columbia University, after serving in the U.S.Marine Corps. Surviving John, is his loving wife of 34 years, Joanne Hennessy Thompson, sister-in-law Paula T. Hennessy and nephew Evan Hennessy Yunck, of Albany, NY; daughters:Cathleen Thompson, of NYC ; Susan Giblin, of Binghamton, NY; Elizabeth, of Scotia,NY; Megan Thompson McGiboney and husband Dennis, of Reno, Nevada; Mary Clare Fischer and husband Eric, of Scotia, NY.; sons J.Jeffery Thompson and wife Kata Butterfield, of Colorado; Peter Thompson and wife Dianna, of Helena, MT; and Joseph Thompson and wife Marilyn, of Schagiticoke, NY. He is predeceased by his beloved son, Gregory Thompson.He is also survived by many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, godchildren, and devoted friends. John led a varied and colorful life...owning a restaurant on Long Island, serving as Deputy Commissioner in Binghamton, NY, working in housing, financing and urban development for State of New York Mortgage Agency, in Albany and Buffalo, NYS Urban Development, Mondev International, and Montreal,Canada. He was instrumental in the revitalization of the historical Steuben Building, in Albany,NY with Smith & Mahoney. John was also a 4th degree Knight of Columbus, at Sacred Heart Church. A charming Irishman with a quick wit and a story, John loved and was loved by many. John loved hockey, playing even until he was 65. He was an avid outdoors man enjoying hunting, fishing and particularly boating. His trawler the Joanna T was the source of much joy and adventures up and down the Intercoastal Waterway. Upon retiring, he moved to the Oak Island/Southport area to enjoy life at the beach. "Another rotten day in Paradise" he would often say. His keen sense of direction always got him where he wanted to go and now it has brought him home. The family wishes to thank Lower Cape Fear Hospice for its kindness in providing a loving end to his journey. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to SECU Hospice House of Brunswick, 955 Mercy Lane SE, Bolivia, NC 28422. A celebration of life mass will be held at Sacred Heart Church, in Southport, on May 25, 2017, at 11 a.m.
